Building an Economy That Works for Everyone

The Center for Community Wealth (CCW) is transforming economic systems to close the racial wealth gap. As Colorado's leader in community wealth building, we work at both policy and grassroots levels to create lasting change.

In Metro Denver, the racial wealth gap is widening, with white households having 10 times the wealth of Black households and 8 times that of Hispanic households. This disparity perpetuates a cycle of economic inequality for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities, resulting in:

Persistent Insecurity

Limited access to living-wage jobs, affordable housing, and quality education

$36k

The median household income for American Indian and Alaska Natives in Denver is $36,000 – about half the median-average

Lower Life Expectancy

$4.8yrs

The Cycle of Disadvantage

The racial wealth gap has far-reaching consequences that extend beyond economic inequality. At CCW, we see how this disparity impacts housing stability, educational outcomes, business ownership, and community health, creating a cycle of disadvantage that persists across generations, preventing families from building wealth.

As BIPOC families and businesses are displaced, we lose not only neighbors but also the cultural diversity and economic vitality that strengthen our communities.

Building a More Equitable Future

The Center for Community Wealth is the only organization in Colorado combining technical assistance, employee ownership promotion, and market opportunity creation. Our community-led, culturally responsive approach:
  • Addresses root causes of the racial wealth gap.
  • Creates sustainable economic opportunities.
  • Builds community ownership and power.
  • Preserves cultural assets and heritage.
When BIPOC communities thrive, all of Colorado benefits. Research shows closing the racial wealth gap could:
  • Add $15 billion to our state's annual GDP
  • Reduce healthcare costs by $80 million
  • Create more vibrant, innovative communities
  • Build stronger local business ecosystems
  • Foster more resilient regional economies

CCW's Three Strategies
for Systemic Change

At the Center for Community Wealth, we work at the intersection of three powerful strategies:

Engaging Anchor Institutions

$15+ institutions

CCW partners with hospitals, universities, and municipalities to craft and implement strategies focused on local procurement, hiring, and investment. We create sustainable opportunities for BIPOC-owned businesses and workers by redirecting these institutions' substantial economic power.

Impact Potential:
  • Millions redirected to local BIPOC businesses
  • New pathways to living-wage jobs
  • Increased local economic resilience

Democratizing Ownership

$2x higher wages

The Center for Community Wealth promotes and advances worker cooperatives and community ownership as critical tools for building community wealth. Through employee and community ownership, workers build equity in their workplace and create generational wealth.

Impact Potential:
  • Higher wages and better benefits
  • Worker control over business decisions
  • Lasting assets for wealth-building
  • Preserved community businesses

Strengthening BIPOC Entrepreneurship

600+ businesses supported

CCW strengthens the environment for BIPOC entrepreneurs by connecting them to technical assistance, affordable capital, and new markets. This comprehensive support helps create sustainable enterprises that build community wealth.

Impact Potential:
  • Increased business stability and growth
  • Job creation in BIPOC communities
  • Preserved cultural assets and services

Economic Justice

We create access to opportunities that lead to health and flourishing, guaranteed by equitable policies and institutions. We understand that economic justice requires addressing historical inequities and transforming systems to ensure BIPOC communities can build lasting wealth. When our policies and institutions foster equitable opportunity, all of Colorado thrives.

Solidarity

We operate in mutual accountability and deep relationships with low-income and BIPOC communities. Our strategies are developed with and led by those most impacted by economic inequity, ensuring solutions truly serve community needs. Through authentic partnership and shared power, we create lasting change.

Sovereignty

We promote the right of people and communities to lead healthy, economically secure lives and to define their own economic and cultural systems. Through community ownership and control of assets, we help build true economic self-determination. This foundation of community control ensures sustainable prosperity for generations to come.
